Lightstream makes teaching and learning more fun for Ings Primary School

"Since Lightstream was installed we haven’t experienced any downtime"

Q - Please introduce yourself and your role within the school?

A - Hi, I’m Lynn Brattan, and I’m the admin and finance manager at Ings Primary School.

Q - Can you tell us a little about your school?

A - We currently have 282 pupils with a 52 place nursery. The school occupies around an acre of land in Ings Road in east Hull and we employ around 40 staff.

Q - Why did you decide to have Lightstream fibre broadband service installed?

A - We receive IT support from Judgeland Systems and during a meeting with them they mentioned how slow our Internet connection was and how much downtime we were getting. They showed us a flyer from KCOM and advised us that to be the best we could be, the way forward was Lightstream. Since Lightstream was installed we haven’t experienced any downtime. It’s the best thing we ever did it – our Internet connection is so fast and efficient.

Q - Has Lightstream made a difference to teaching and learning methods within the school?

A - Teaching and learning are much more fun for the kids (and for us!). Staff are able to use the Internet more during lessons as we’ve been able to install computers in each classroom instead of just having an IT suite, and we’re also running computer clubs. The students can learn on the move too with the ability to use iPads and tablets throughout the school as we also have the whole school running off WiFi, which is only possible because of Lightstream. In class pupils are no longer tied to their chairs – they can wander around the classroom and share their learning with ease.

Q - You’ve also had SmartComms phone system installed. Why was that and what difference has it made to the school?

A - Our old phone system was good, but we wanted more and that’s what SmartComms offered. Our parents use the system’s Pupil Auto Attend feature to let us know if their child won’t be at school, which has freed up the time we spend answering calls about sickness and absence. My admin staff and I can’t believe what we have been missing out before we had SmartComms. If I hadn’t received an email flyer from KCOM about it we’d still be on the old system.

Q - Why did you choose KCOM for your new phone system?

A - I have to admit I’m a big believer in supporting local businesses, and from previous experience with KCOM I had no reason to look anywhere else.Leanne, KCOM’s education account manager, and the rest of the team who set up the system have been brilliant.I would certainly recommend KCOM and its services to other schools, and I’ve already done so.
