Pioneers take digital route to success

Earlier this month the Hull and East Yorkshire Digital Awards celebrated the region's thriving community of tech talent.

Earlier this month the Hull and East Yorkshire Digital Awards celebrated the region's thriving community of tech talent.

Winners included Hull-based Sauce, a new company focused on developing applications that are creative, functional, concise and worthwhile – in other words, apps that will save companies time, money and hassle.

Working alongside Hull University Union, Sauce created the “Welcome Fest” mobile app, allowing the student population to access digitally information on the union’s services and discover more about the campus and city.

Previously this was communicated in print. Moving to an application was a national first and was driven by student focus groups.

Welcome Fest will be available to freshers as part of the University of Hull’s welcome pack, allowing students to discover more about their new environment before they arrive in Hull.

The app enables Union staff to see which events students are planning to attend so that it can estimate numbers and respond proactively.

Judges praised the app for helping new students navigate the minefield of the first weeks of university and said it had “immense potential for growth across the UK”.

Another winner was Hull-based specialist engineering company Spencer Group, in the Best Global Reach category.

Spencer’s XER Schedule Toolkit is a cost-effective and easy to use software package that enhances the project planning process in major engineering projects so that they are more likely to be delivered on time and within budget.

The Toolkit converts information from complex planning software into commonly-used Microsoft Excel and lets project teams view the information via user-friendly interfaces.

Despite minimal marketing, the software has attracted 20,000 global downloads and £250,000 in sales from 33 countries. The product is now driving efficiency in billions of dollars’ worth of major engineering projects.

Digital Awards judges described Spencer’s software as “unique” and “game-changing” and were particularly impressed that the company was able to expand what was essentially an in-house solution into a global product.
