You’ve got to keep up with the customers.

In an age when the High Street has had to embrace high tech to remain relevant, Dean Marshall knows the benefits of an ultrafast broadband connection.

That’s why he’s taken advantage of the Government’s Gigabit Voucher Scheme to pay for the installation of Lightstream broadband at his east Hull shop.

Dean, who’s run Motabitz motor spares and accessories in Holderness Road for 23 years, is now able to liaise with suppliers instantly online to make sure he’s got the products his customers wants – and then use his ultrafast connection to ensure they can pay in a myriad of high tech ways.

In short, having a 500Mbps Lightstream connection has made running a business a smoother and more streamlined process for Dean.

“It’s made life a lot simpler,” he says, tapping on his Wi-Fi-connected laptop.

“I can now get access to 50,000 different parts – from specialist batteries to spark plugs and windscreen wipers at the touch of a button – and if I’ve not got it in stock I can get parts delivered next day, or even the same day, from suppliers all over the country. That means I can get customers what they want, when they want it.

“It’s also made life a whole lot easier when I have sales reps in, as now they can log into the Wi-Fi and take orders right there and then.”

The Government’s £67m Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme was launched in March 2018 and is making vouchers of up to £3,000 available to small and medium sized businesses towards the connection costs of full fibre, ultrafast broadband.

The scheme operates on a first-come first-served basis, so SME owners are urged to apply for their share of the fund before it runs out.

The difference a world-class broadband connection can make to a business is huge, says Dean.

Lightstream has enabled Motabitz customers to pay via a whole range of options including mobile banking apps, PayPal and contactless.

“Everything is done now on mobiles phones, PayPal, contactless – and being on Lightstream allows us to deal with that,” says Dean. “It’s brought our technology bang up to date.

“I’d definitely recommend applying for the voucher. It’s not very often you get something for nothing – but if you can get the Government to pay for something that will benefit your business then why not?”
